‘SERPENTS OF THE DEATHS HEAD’ The Waffen SS anti-partisan mountain Battalion ‘Karstjager’ was formed during 1942 from Tyrolean and Italian volunteers to police the rocky border between Italy and Croatia. Its members fought an often vicious and no holds barred battle against Italian and Yugoslavian Partisans many of its men were awarded the loathsome hydra, (multi-headed serpent) and swastika anti-partisan badge. During the summer of 1944 the unit was increased in size and re-named the 24th Waffen SS Division der SS ‘Karstjager’, lack of suitable recruits enabled the Germans to raise a unit with the strength of a weak brigade. This foreign unit of the Waffen SS finished WWII fighting the British 8th Army and Italian partisans fighting under the redoubtable SS General Heinz Harmel. Figures are also suitable for Army mountain troops and the famous late war ski division. |
